Key takeaways
- Compare the recording, sharing and competition features you actually need. A free recording tier does not mean every group feature is free.
- MashON Free live groups support three participants in total; PRO supports ten. Ghost Mashes are free.
- Apple Workout and Fitness are different from the paid Fitness+ content service.
- Sensor pairing depends on the recording app and device. Apple Watch supports compatible external sensors; it is not restricted to its built-in heart-rate sensor.
- Test exports and imports with a few activities before moving your history. GPX, FIT and an account archive are not interchangeable.
A free Strava alternative is useful only if it covers the job you want to replace. You might want to record a run, see cycling sensor data, keep your own route files or take part in an activity with friends. Those needs do not always point to the same app.
This guide compares practical workflows for 2026. It is an editorial comparison, not a side-by-side benchmark of reliability or performance. MashON is our app, so we include its limits alongside the reasons you might choose it.
Why look for an alternative to Strava?
Start with the feature you are missing
Strava states that recording and sharing activities are free. Additional analysis, route tools and competition features can require a subscription. Identify the particular feature you need rather than treating every paid feature as a restriction on recording.
If your friends already use Strava, switching also has a cost in setup and coordination. You may prefer to keep the feed and add another tool for a particular session.
Segments, a ghost and a live group are different experiences
A segment comparison ranks efforts on a defined part of a route. A ghost lets you compare your progress with a recorded effort. A live group activity shows available participant information during the session. Choose the experience that fits the outing rather than expecting each app to reproduce the others.
Privacy is a workflow, not a ranking
Review who can view an activity, which route details it reveals and what remains after a session. Live location and a saved route need separate consideration. An app being new, private-group focused or free does not by itself establish that its defaults suit you.
Which alternatives are free, and which are freemium?
Define a usable free tier for your group
Write down your normal session: the devices, group size, sensors and sharing you need. Test those features on the plan you intend to keep after any trial ends. A useful free tier for a solo runner may be too limited for a larger group.
MashON offers free Ghost Mashes and Free live group Mashes for up to three participants, including the HOST. PRO supports up to ten participants. Creating and managing a persistent Team, creating public challenges and activity weather features require PRO. See the plan details.
Check limits without assuming a trap
Find out whether a limit affects recording, analysis, group capacity or another feature. Check exports separately. Do not assume that a missing sensor reading or a connection problem is deliberately caused by a free plan or fixed by paying.
Comparison: recording, sensors, groups and exports
| Option | Core workflow | Sensors and hardware | Sharing and limits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Strava | Free activity recording and sharing; extra features can require a subscription. | Its mobile app supports compatible BLE heart-rate monitors. Other recording devices can supply additional activity data. | Activity feed and competition tools. Check current subscription access for specific features. |
| Apple Workout and Fitness | Built-in workout recording and review with supported Apple devices. | Apple Watch readings and compatible external sensors; cycling accessories can supply power and cadence. | Supported Activity sharing and personal competition tools. Fitness+ is a separate content subscription. |
| MashON | Live group Mashes, Ghost Mashes, recorded summaries and Saved Activities. | iPhone-led activities, a paired Apple Watch and compatible BLE heart-rate, cycling-power or cadence sensors. | Free live groups: three total. PRO: ten total. Team and public challenge creation require PRO. |
The table is not a numerical score. If your essential feature is missing, that matters more than adding up features you will not use. Our MashON and Strava comparison explains how the two can fit into one routine.
Where MashON may not replace Strava
MashON does not reproduce Strava’s segment ecosystem or every training-analysis tool. Its current app is for iPhone and Apple Watch; do not plan an Android group rollout around it. If your crew values an existing feed and archive, keeping Strava alongside MashON may be simpler than a complete migration.
How should you use Reddit recommendations?
Read them for concrete workflows and questions to test. A useful report names the device, app version, sensor and activity type, then explains what worked or failed. An unsupported statement that “everyone is leaving” does not tell you whether an app suits your group.
We have not conducted a survey of Reddit users or established a consensus winner. When you read a recommendation, check its date and current official documentation before treating it as a description of today’s free plan.
Which apps support heart rate, power and cadence?
Apple Watch can use external sensors
Apple documents connecting compatible Bluetooth cycling accessories for power and cadence. It also supports compatible external heart-rate monitors. That makes a blanket claim that Apple Fitness uses only the Watch’s built-in sensor incorrect.
Direct recording is different from importing sensor data
Strava’s mobile sensor documentation describes BLE heart-rate pairing. Receiving a file from another recorder with power or cadence is different from pairing those sensors directly to the Strava phone app.
MashON connects to compatible BLE sensors exposing standard heart-rate, cycling-power or cadence services. Check the sensor guide and test your hardware. A cycling cadence service is not a promise of running cadence from every Watch or footpod.
Test the whole session
Pair before starting, confirm a live reading and try a short activity with the screen locked. Review the saved result afterwards. If a value is missing, check permissions, battery and sensor compatibility rather than assuming the subscription is responsible.
How do privacy and data portability compare?
Try the export before you need it
Strava’s export tools include individual activity files and an account archive. A bulk archive is not necessarily a folder of ready-to-import GPX files; originals may use other formats.
MashON supports GPX export from supported activity summaries when route data is available. It does not offer a universal one-click bulk export of every history field. A useful map export is also different from preserving every sensor sample and app-specific result.
Check what a group member sees
MashON’s Privacy Policy explains the difference between transient live sharing and saved activity or route data. Check membership and available controls before starting. Do not assume a separate per-friend visibility toggle exists for every field.
For any app, inspect the result from a friend’s account and review the service’s retention and deletion rules. Owning a copy of a file does not remove a shared copy elsewhere.
Which option fits cycling, running or walking?
A small cycling group
Try a short live Mash if seeing available participant metrics during the ride is your priority. Check the three-person Free limit before inviting the whole crew, and confirm any power or cadence sensors. A group that wants Teams and schedules should review PRO ownership requirements.
Running with personal goals
Apple Workout may cover your recording and personal pacing needs. Strava may remain the sharing destination your friends already use. A Ghost Mash is another way to revisit an outdoor recorded route. None of these makes a watch result an officially timed race result.
Casual walks
Choose the simplest recording and sharing workflow that meets your needs. Our walking tracker comparison covers history, exports and group limits in more detail.
Can you move your Strava activity history?
- Request or download your data using Strava’s documented export tools.
- Check which formats the destination accepts, including whether it supports timestamps and sensor fields.
- Import a few representative activities and compare route, time, distance and available sensor data.
- Keep the original archive before migrating more recordings or deleting anything.
MashON’s Saved Activities workflow supports importing suitable recorded activities for reuse. GPX recordings used for Ghost Mashes need recorded timestamps. Do not assume an account archive imports in one operation or recreates old kudos, leaderboard positions or group results.
Frequently asked questions
Is MashON completely free?
It has Free and PRO features. Ghost Mashes are free; Free live groups support three participants in total. PRO expands the limit and enables additional Team, challenge-creation and weather features.
What should I use instead of Strava?
Choose according to the recording, sharing, sensor and group features you need. You can also keep Strava for the feed while trying another tool for a specific activity.
Does Apple Watch work with an external heart-rate strap?
Compatible Bluetooth heart-rate monitors are supported. Check the particular accessory and recording app before relying on it.
Will all my sensor data survive migration?
Not necessarily. Source format, export options and the importing app affect what transfers. Compare a few activities before migrating the full archive.
Can ten friends use a Free MashON group?
No. Free group Mashes support three participants, including the HOST. PRO supports ten.
