Best Fitness Tracker App for Walking: Free Tiers Ranked

What you can record, keep, export and share without paying, and how to pick a tracker for the way you walk.

9 min read

Key takeaways

  • Free activity recording, a step count and an outdoor GPS route are different features. Check the workflow you need.
  • Apple Fitness, Strava and MashON suit different needs; the ranking below is an editorial starting point, not a benchmark test.
  • Strava provides export tools for your own activities on its website. MashON supports GPX export when route data is available.
  • MashON Free group Mashes support three participants in total; PRO supports ten. Ghost Mashes are free.
  • Battery use depends on the device, settings and conditions. Test your own route rather than relying on a universal drain percentage.

The best fitness tracker app for walking depends on what you want after the walk: a simple record, a shareable route, or a group activity you can enjoy with friends. A long feature list does not tell you which parts need a subscription.

This guide compares Apple Fitness, Strava and MashON for walk recording, history, exports and group use. We rank them by a stated use case rather than pretending one app wins for every walker.

Which free walking tracker should you try first?

1. Apple Fitness for walkers already using Apple Watch

Start with the built-in tools if you already have an Apple Watch and want a straightforward workout record. Outdoor Walk can provide a route when location permissions and GPS data are available. Step and activity totals alone are not the same as recording an outdoor route.

Apple Fitness+ is a separate subscription for guided fitness content. Do not confuse it with the basic ability to record a workout or use supported activity-sharing features.

2. Strava for a shared activity feed

Try Strava if friends already share their walks, rides and runs there. Strava states that recording and sharing activities are free. Check its current feature list for additional analysis, route tools and competition features.

3. MashON for Ghost Mashes and small live groups

Try MashON if you want to replay a recorded walk as a ghost or take part in a live group activity. Ghost Mashes are free. Free live group Mashes support up to three participants, including the HOST; PRO supports up to ten. A group of ten should not plan around the free limit.

This order prioritises a familiar built-in workflow, then an established sharing destination, then MashON’s specific group and ghost features. If those features are your main reason to walk with an app, your own order may be different.

Which apps offer GPS recording without a subscription?

What a GPS recording means

A GPS recording stores position samples that can form a map of the route. Sampling and accuracy vary with the device, signal and settings; “GPS tracking” does not mean an uninterrupted perfect location measurement.

A step counter may estimate movement without saving a route. An indoor walk may have useful time and distance information without an outdoor GPS trace. Decide which record you need before comparing apps.

Check what happens to the route afterwards

Saving a workout, displaying its map and exporting its track are separate capabilities. Test one completed walk from start to finish. Can you open the map later? Can you find the export action? Does the file contain the expected route?

For MashON, check the equipment guide and Apple Watch workflow. Start the activity on iPhone and use the paired Watch for available readings. Metrics differ by activity and connected equipment; do not expect every cycling sensor to provide walking metrics.

How much route history does a free plan keep?

A history screen is not a retention promise

Check the app’s retention and deletion rules rather than assuming every free account deletes older routes or every paid account keeps them forever. There is no evidence here for a blanket claim that walking apps silently erase routes after 30 days.

Strava lets you revisit your recorded activities, with some analysis reserved for subscribers. Apple’s workout data depends on what has been recorded, retained and synced through your devices and Health setup. Backups and account deletion are separate issues from a subscription tier.

MashON history and saved routes

Activity History shows recorded summaries. A route may load from a matching Apple Health workout and can be unavailable while syncing or if the workout has no GPS route. Saved Activities are reusable recordings you choose to keep for later use.

MashON does not impose a separate rolling history window for its free plan. Keep a copy of important routes and understand what deleting a summary, Health workout or Saved Activity removes.

Which apps let you export your walking data?

Strava: export your own activity from the website

Strava’s export documentation describes original activity files, GPX and account archives. Use the website for those tools. Exporting your own recording is a different task from downloading a planned route or someone else’s activity.

Apple Health: an account of your health and fitness data

Apple provides Export All Health Data in Health. Its documented XML export is not the same as a dedicated “Export GPX” button for an individual walk in Fitness. Check the result before relying on it for another app’s import.

MashON: GPX when a usable route is available

MashON’s activity summary supports Export GPX when route data is available. A missing or unsynced route can prevent a useful export; that is different from a PRO requirement. The app does not offer a general CSV export equivalent for every activity field.

Use a completed test walk to verify the route and file before building a shared archive around it. If you use Strava too, review MashON’s Strava integration so you understand imports, uploads and possible duplicates.

This is a feature comparison, not a measured reliability or battery ranking. Plan details can change; check the linked documentation and the app’s purchase screen before paying.

What we have not ranked

We have not assigned scores to Peloton, PaceUp or Nike Training Club as interchangeable outdoor GPS trackers. Different fitness apps serve different jobs. Without verifying the exact walking workflow and current plan, a row marked “limited” or “heavy upsells” would not be a fair comparison.

What about challenges and walking with friends?

Separate recording from competition

A free walk recording does not automatically include every leaderboard, group challenge or route-planning feature. Strava’s subscription documentation is the place to check its current paid features. Check club membership and challenge access separately rather than assuming that a recording plan includes every social feature.

Apple’s Activity sharing and competitions are distinct from a Fitness+ subscription. Do not buy guided content just because you assume it unlocks ordinary friend competitions.

Be clear about MashON Free and PRO

A live Mash and a public route challenge are different features. PRO expands group capacity and enables creating and managing Teams and creating public challenges. Joining a Team by invitation does not require each member to subscribe. A free Ghost Mash is not a promise of an unlimited free group.

If you only need to arrange a walk, a group chat and a simple tracker may be sufficient. For a small crew that wants live participation or a familiar route to replay, test those features together on a short walk.

How should you judge upgrade prompts?

Try the app on the plan you expect to keep. Check the recording screen, the saved result, the route and the export action. Note whether an upgrade prompt blocks something you consider essential or merely offers an optional tool.

We have not measured competitors’ prompt frequency and cannot support claims that one app always interrupts a walk or another never shows a paywall. An app requesting payment when you select a paid feature is different from interrupting an active recording.

What should walkers on older phones check?

Battery and route quality

Record your usual route with the settings you intend to use and compare battery before and after. Screen brightness, mobile coverage, battery condition, audio and background work all affect the result. A fixed claim such as “20–30% in 90 minutes” would need a defined device and test.

Check the route against familiar landmarks and repeat the test if a track looks wrong. Running two recorders simultaneously can change battery use and complicate the result. A few metres of GPS variation should not turn an easy walk into an argument about who won.

Watch and sensor support

Confirm your phone and Watch meet the app’s requirements. Test any Bluetooth accessory with the specific app and activity before buying equipment for the whole group. Available heart rate, cadence and other readings are not identical across every device.

Which app fits your walking routine?

  • Simple Watch recording: try Apple Workout and review the result in Fitness.
  • A feed your friends already use: try Strava and confirm your recording and export workflow.
  • Ghost routes and live group Mashes: try MashON, checking participant limits first.

Start with one familiar walk. Save it, review it and export it if that matters to you. If your real goal is getting people to show up, our check-in app guide can help you separate planning from tracking.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best free fitness app for walking?

Choose by use case rather than a universal winner: built-in Watch recording, an existing social feed, or MashON’s Ghost and group activities. Verify the specific features you need on the free plan.

Do I need a subscription to record a GPS walk?

Several apps offer recording without a subscription, but not every fitness app records an outdoor route. Check device support, Location access and the saved result.

Can I export walking data for free?

Strava documents exports for your own activities on its website. Apple Health offers a full-data export. MashON supports GPX from summaries with usable route data. Those are different workflows and file formats.

Are MashON groups of ten free?

No. Free group Mashes support three participants in total; PRO supports ten. Ghost Mashes are free, while Team creation and public challenge creation require PRO.

How much battery will a walking tracker use?

There is no reliable single percentage for every phone and walk. Test a familiar route with your device, settings and normal connectivity.
