Measure the right distance

Measure saddle height along the seat tube from the bottom-bracket center to the saddle top at your normal sitting point. Measure cycling inseam barefoot with a level book held firmly between your legs; measure floor to the top edge. Read crank length from the crank arm.

What does height alone tell you?

The height estimate assumes an inseam of 45–49% of body height, then multiplies by 0.883. This broad illustrative range is not a validated fit interval. Measuring inseam is more useful.

Two inseam formulas

LeMond = inseam × 0.883. Hamley = inseam × 1.09 − crank length (in centimeters). For an 82 cm inseam and 172.5 mm crank, these give 72.4 cm and 72.1 cm, with a midpoint of 72.3 cm.

A starting point for your fit

These estimates do not account for flexibility, shoes, pedals, saddle shape, or riding position. Make small adjustments and check your comfort and pedaling. If discomfort persists, consult a qualified bike fitter.
